EAR Journal 33rd Edition

'Methodologies of Sustainable Projects'

The 33rd edition of EAR, Edinburgh Architecture Research, invites research papers and design projects that explore sustainable methodologies. Sustainable design requires skilful integration of multiple, often competing social, financial and environmental concerns. On the one hand, sophisticated energy modelling techniques and metrics for tracking energy consumption and carbon emissions encourage quantitative methods of analysis. On the other hand, an understanding of cultural issues tied to resource inequity and social issues tied to consumption patterns encourages softer modes of investigation. What are some strategies by which designers satisfy the increasingly sophisticated demands and multiple readings of sustainability without sacrificing design legibility? Given the broad range of lateral disciplines, geography, ecology, sociology, etc., concerned with sustainability, how do designers appropriate responsibly from these related fields? The journal provides a venue for exploring these topics and will act as a catalogue for innovative methodologies deployed through research and design. Academics, students and practitioners are welcome to submit research papers and design project submissions that explore these themes.

EAR invites two types of submissions that investigate the tools, methods, processes and approaches that are generative of sustainable architecture design: about 5000 word papers that elaborate on ongoing or completed research; and 700 – 1000 words + 5-10 image submissions of speculative or built projects. In both cases, we invite abstracts of no more than 200 words due 16 Jan 2012. Please email your abstract and the following information to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

  • an abstract: no more than 200 words

  • name, affiliation and contact details of author/s
  • a biography: no more than 200 words
