ASCAAD 2013 conference

Digital Crafting:Virtualizing Architecture and Delivering Real Built Environment

Effat University, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

December 16 2013 - December 18 2013

ASCAAD 7th Conference theme is exploring the linkages among digital design process thinking, constructability, the digital manufacturing process and their impact on the practice of architecture, engineering and construction. However, through digital design computation process, one would notice that the traditional master-builder design thinking approaches are still strongly implemented in processes such as: object making, digital fabrication, design-to-fabricate, parametric technology, BIM, machining, manufacturing analysis, building performance analysis. This evolution has combined the ability of fine crafted detailing with digital design and manufacturing and put a shift towards seamless collaboration between design and construction.

Topics of Interest

ASCAAD 2013 invites submissions of original research papers, posters and exhibitions on topics related to computer-aided design, including but not limited to:

  • § Design intelligence and cognition
  • § CAAD Curriculum
  • § Computational research in design education
  • § Computational research in design practice
  • § Generative and parametric design
  • § Interdisciplinary computational design research
  • § Creative Design Concepts, taxonomies and Strategies
  • § Computer-supported design collaboration
  • § Ubiquitous computing
  • § Virtual and interactive environments
  • Sensory Environments
  • § Research, Education and Practice
  • § Urban/ City/ regional planning and urban performance's visualization.
  • § Digital tools in design and construction

Conference Venue

The 7th ASCAAD International Conference ASCAAD 2013 will be held at the Department of Architecture, Effat University, Jeddah, Kingdom Saudi Arabia.

Historical background

Effat University is the first female educational entity in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and today, one of the leading universities in the region. It was founded in 1999 in Jeddah and named after Her Royal Highness Queen Effat, wife of King Faisal. The University aims to bring academic excellence to local women and become a community resource for future generations in their quest for progress and self-development.

The city of Jeddah is located on the coast of the Red Sea and is the major urban center of western Saudi Arabia. It is the largest city in Makkah Province, the largest sea port on the Red Sea, and the second largest city in Saudi Arabia after the capital city, Riyadh. With a population currently at 3.2 million, Jeddah is an important commercial hub in Saudi Arabia. Jeddah is the principal gateway to Mecca. Submission and Languages

Types of papers

Two types of papers could be submitted: papers that describe well-developed or completed research (max 5000 words, or 10 pages of our template) and short papers that describe research in progress (max 3000 words, or 6 pages of our template). Abstract submission must be in Arabic or English with no more than 500 words. Upon the acceptance of the abstract, full paper can also be submitted in Arabic or English. Submissions should be sent in Word Document Format or Rich Text Format RTF. Each paper will be subject to a blind review and will be sent to two to three referees. If the paper is accepted, author(s) will be invited to present the paper and have it included in the published ASCAAD 2013 conference proceedings. It is a condition of inclusion that at least one of the authors attends the conference and pays the conference fees.

Papers should be formatted according to the ASCAAD paper template.
