1st Annual AHRA Research Student Symposium:
University of
Westminster
7th May 2004
Call for Papers:
The central part of AHRA’s launch event, to be hosted in
the Department of Architecture at Westminster University on Friday
7th May 2004, is its first-ever symposium for research students
in the field, enabling them to present their work to an eminent
national audience. The intentions are to help the development
of younger researchers and to encourage the exploration of new
and emerging areas of humanities research. All papers for the
symposium will go through a rigorous refereeing process prior
to selection.
Papers are invited on any theme related to the
architectural humanities, whether it comes from architectural
history, architectural theory, cultural studies, urbanism, design
theory, philosophy, visual representation, landscape, etc. The
symposium will allow some of the best up-and-coming research students
working in the architectural humanities to put forward a broad
range of specific topics of investigation, thereby giving those
attending an overview of current interests across the field. It
is not anticipated that any publication will be produced directly
from this inaugural event; nevertheless, it will give research
students the opportunity to air their work publicly and to get
useful feedback from other students and leading academics in the
architectural humanities.
Eligibility:
This call for papers is open to all research students who are
studying in one the various areas classified under the rubric
of architectural humanities in British universities, whether they
are located in schools of architecture or in cognate departments.
To be eligible, the applicant has to be currently engaged on a
full-time or part-time degree at MA/MSc, MPhil or PhD levels.
Application procedure:
All applicants who wish to present at the symposium must submit
an abstract that outlines the full content and character of their
proposed paper. The abstract should be around 1000 words in length.
It must be submitted electronically in Adobe Acrobat .pdf format
to Professor Murray Fraser of the University of Westminster at
the following email address:
m.fraser@westminster.ac.uk
No other format will be accepted. The use of Acrobat
format will enable applicants to include images in the abstract,
if they desire, subject to a maximum overall file size of 1MB.
The deadline for abstracts of proposed papers is
15th March 2004.
Each of the proposed papers will then be sent electronically
to the members of a refereeing panel that has been appointed by
AHRA, whose task will be to decide which should be selected. The
choice of the panel will be based initially on the perceived quality
of the proposed paper, and then on the degree to which it will
contribute towards a broad range of subject areas for the event.
Successful applicants will be notified if they have been selected
by 31st March 2004. This will give them just over a month to prepare
a paper for a 20-minute presentation at the symposium on Friday
7th May 2004. Slides and data projectors will be available as
visual aids at the event, and applicants are encouraged to consider
using both text and images for their proposed papers.
Refereeing panel:
Sarah Chaplin, Kingston University
Professor David Dunster, University of Liverpool
Professor Murray Fraser, University of Westminster
Andrew Higgott, University of East London
